A Patagonia Wedding Full of Peace, Positivity, and Nods to the Past

While standing on the rocks at the edge of a rippling blue lake, the bride and groom share a kiss while the snow-dusted mountains of Torres del Paine witness in the background.

G and D pay homage to their past and their shared heritage in a romantic elopement in Chile

G and D’s wedding is one that– in every precious detail and sweet moment– both carried on and honored their past, their heritage, and their deep love for one another and for adventure. The two first became girlfriend and boyfriend on an early adventure together– a trip to Argentina. It seems fitting that the next key moment in their relationship, which followed some time later, took place in Ecuador, where D proposed to G at her grandparents’ bodas de oro (50 years of marriage celebration) in front of her entire family. Choosing to solemnize their marriage in Torres del Paine, Chile was an easy decision to make, as they wanted something both intimate and representative of that first trip together where they officially became a couple.

Not only was the location full of portent and meaning, but so too were all the fine details of their big day. G and D curated each with utmost intention and thoughtfulness, paying homage to their shared Latinx heritage by choosing items exclusively from small-business owners who are women and men of color. G’s gorgeous dress came from Salvadorian designer Johana Hernandez; her dried flowers (which she hand-crafted with the help of Nourish Botanica in Atlanta) included healing sage and lavender; her Cadena Collective earrings were handmade in Mexico using talavera and fresh pearls; and D’s custom suit, including a lining of pictures of the bride’s loved ones, came from Lavoisier in New Orleans. Even I, their photographer, am Latinx– born and raised in Chile.

In addition to honoring their culture and values, G and D wanted a wedding day full of love, peace, and positivity in a place surrounded by all of Mother Nature’s beauty. They got what they wished for, indeed. Upon waking and getting ready in their hotel in the park, G and D (along with their friend and officiant, Mac) drove to a lovely spot for their first look. The skies started out clear, and,  remarkably, there was little wind. G got to wear her lovely dark hair down, and she looked absolutely stunning. D, too, looked dapper in his dark, custom suit. Clouds rolled in after a while, but the sun still splintered through, casting a pleasant and dreamy yellow-gold haze over the rest of the day.

At a second spot, the two privately exchanged their hand-written vows, the looming mountains that silhouetted them reflecting off of the crystalline waters of Lago Pehoe. Finally, at a third location, G and D said their vows and then popped a bottle of Reposado– one that the couple had been saving especially for that very moment. After snuggling up in their matching “Mr.” and “Mrs.” blankets (made by the bride’s aunt), followed by more hiking, G and D returned to their hotel, where the staff surprised the happy newlyweds with celebratory champagne and a joyous first dance to “Tiempo de Vals”, a customary Latin American wedding waltz. What a perfect way to end their perfect day.
