Choosing a Breckenridge Elopement:
5 Reasons You Should!

Mountains seem to call to us. It’s where Earth crests to meet the sky. When we’re in their midst, we feel spellbound by all of nature’s colors and textures—of how the sun warms our skin, yet snow crunches under our boots. Or how it’s so quiet, yet rivers and waterfalls are loud enough that we hear them well before reaching them. If you feel mesmerized by what natural Colorado has to offer, then here are five more reasons why getting married in Breckenridge would be a perfect fit for the mountain lover in you.

1. Breckenridge has a small-town, romantic feel

Breckenridge is a small ski town with charm that doesn’t melt away when the snow does. Picture strolling down the adorable Main Street in your hiking garb and boots. Except you don’t need a meet-cute scene to bump into the future love of your life.

... and a rich history

The town has a fascinating gold mine history too, starting in 1859 when gold was first discovered along the Blue River. By mid-1860, about 8,000 people had arrived hoping to strike it rich in this valley. Between 1860 and the 1930s, Breckenridge produced about a million ounces of gold, much of it through dredging. You can still see the piles of crushed rocks, called tailing piles, from the dredges around town.

The shacks and shanties, typical of a western gold boomtown, are long gone, though. 1961 witnessed another boom era for Breckenridge, starting with the development of the Peak 8 Ski Area making Breckenridge one of the largest ski resort areas in Colorado.

Today, you’ll see modern and alpine-style buildings, condos, and luxurious private ski chalets. But the money from tourists who come from around the world for the beautiful scenery and skiing also funds the restoration and preservation of the original buildings. The old west town still exists as part of the Breckenridge Historic District. In 1980, the historic district was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The district highlights the business, residential and religious buildings of old Breckenridge with facades and structures. As part of the preservation effort, the Breckenridge Heritage Alliance gives district tours. These efforts help visitors envision the gold rush era and Colorado’s Victorian Age which enhances the romance of this sweet town.

2. Breckenridge is remote yet accessible

Fly into Denver International Airport, claim your bags, find your rental car, and less than two hours later, breathe in that heavenly mountain air–because you’re already in Breckenridge! It’s that close to Denver! So barring any heavy traffic, you won’t have to wind your way through mountains for hours. Which is nice for long, romantic, elopement weekends when you’d rather be in the great outdoors hiking or rafting than commuting.

Once you’re in the town of Breck, as it’s lovingly called, you can take a Breckenridge Free Ride anywhere within the town limits! The Free Ride is a collaborative service of the Town of Breckenridge and the Breckenridge Ski Resort, with the environmentally conscious goal of reducing the number of cars on the road. How awesome is that?

You can check traffic conditions through CoTrip.org. But I like to keep in close touch with my couples as they arrive in Colorado so I can give updates on traffic and weather conditions.

3. You’ll have fun en route to Breck!

The drive between Denver and Breckenridge is scenic, but if you’d like to explore a bit, make a stop in historic Silver Plume for a taste of what an Old West ghost town is like; Red Rocks to see the unusual formations and the famous amphitheater that has hosted concerts for major acts since 1941; Tommyknocker Brewery for a bite in Idaho Springs; or Silverthorne for any last minute gear and clothes shopping.

4. Breckenridge offers year-round activities

Breckenridge is known for terrific skiing and fantastic powder. After all, the town sits at an astounding 9,600 feet! But Breckenridge doesn’t shut down when the skiing does! There are still plenty of people around and lots of activities.

Most hotels and restaurants are open year round too. So even if you’re not having a Breckenridge winter elopement, you won’t need to worry that you’re coming to a ghost town. The town enjoys gorgeous weather no matter the season.

Outside of the winter months, lots of sunshine and melting snow means rushing rivers with tons of recreational options, great hiking through meadows of wildflowers and lush pine forests, and idyllic little hidden spots to exchange promises of love.

5. Breckenridge is known for incredible scenery

Your Breckenridge elopement will be surrounded by unbelievable beauty no matter where you choose to say your vows. You’ll be in the middle of the majestic Rocky Mountains, rich with history, and famous for world-class skiing. The region is covered in shimmering aspen trees, cool wetlands, and forests thick with spruce and fir.

It’s my job as your photographer to capture every gorgeous moment, and I know all the best spots for naturally romantic settings. Just let me know how far you’re willing to hike and I’ll handle the rest.

And if you want to get married in Breckenridge proper for a more Hallmark Movie-wedding look, that’s great too! It’s your elopement day! No matter where you decide to hold your Breckenridge elopement, I’m ready to take care of all the details so you get to focus on the number one thing: your number one.

Let’s Talk Breckenridge Weather:

When’s the best time to elope in Breckenridge?

Another good reason for a Breckenridge elopement is how fantastic the weather is year-round.

  • Spring in Breckenridge

Great skiing on fresh snowfall and tons of sunshine yielding crisp days and chilly nights. This is peak ski-season, so if you love winter sports, this is the time for you to go. Enjoy the slopes mid-morning, then find a patio to enjoy the afternoon sunshine together. See images of a spring elopement in Breckenridge.

  • Summer in Breckenridge

Great for brilliant sunshine and carpets of wildflowers. Your choice of hiking and biking trails is wide open too. And if your idea of a romantic adventure includes water, this is your best time. The rivers are full and running, making them perfect for rafting, paddle-boarding, and fly-fishing. See images of a summer elopement in Breckenridge.

  • Fall in Breckenridge

The aspens’ leaves change to orange and yellow, completely transforming the landscape. So pretty and still warm enough for enjoying hiking, biking, or one of the many fall festivals–ideal for elopement photographs–held this time of year. The mountains will begin to have a picturesque dusting of snow. See images of a fall elopement in Breckenridge.

  • Winter in Breckenridge

A Breckenridge winter elopement would be utterly charming with the crystal beauty of fresh snowfall and frozen waterfalls to serve as your backdrop. Spend the rest of your time here on skis or boards, and cozy up nightly in front of a blazing fireplace.

Part of my job as a Colorado elopement photographer is to guide couples through all of their seasonal options so they can decide what works best for them. I’m always happy to chat if you have questions!

Where to Stay in Breckenridge?

“Where should I stay in Breckenridge?” is one of the first questions I usually get from my couples. Fortunately, there are many great lodging options available all year round for your Breckenridge elopement.

Breckenridge Hotels

The Lodge at Breckenridge is an extremely popular hotel that gets great reviews. It’s five minutes from downtown Breckenridge and not far from skiing. The property overlooks Breckenridge Ski Resort, Boreas Pass, and the Ten Mile Range. They also offer a spa, a lounge, and an onsite restaurant.

If you’d like more of an apartment feel, the luxurious Hyatt Vacation Club at The Ranahan, offers villas and suites that are roomy yet cozy. Each guest room has a fireplace, washer/dryer, WiFi, a refrigerator, living area, and a flat-screen TV. It’s close to skiing (free shuttle), golf, and shopping, and the property also offers a lounge, indoor and outdoor pools, whirlpool, and a fitness center.

The conveniently located Village at Breckenridge Resort is adjacent to Breckenridge Ski Resort and a short walk to Main Street for shopping and dining. Each condo suite has a fully stocked kitchenette, and some have fireplaces and balconies. There are also indoor and outdoor pools, whirlpools, and a free shuttle.

Vacation Rentals in Breckenridge

Don’t overlook the many wonderful and affordable rentals around town. They are intimate, private, and have everything you need for a perfectly romantic stay. These are a few fantastic ones with highly rated hosts that I recommend, if this is the route you want to go!

Best Places to Elope in Breckenridge, Co.

Breckenridge and the entire Summit County area have so many lovely places for your Colorado elopement. If you prefer to hit the trail to a secluded natural spot for your vows, marriage ceremony, or nearlywed/newlywed photos, I’m always game to go. Here are some of my favorite outdoor locations in which to photograph my couples.

Sapphire Point

The first thing you need to know about a Sapphire Point elopement is that you need to make reservations for its famous overlook with stunning views of the sparkling Dillon Reservoir and Gore and Tenmile mountain ranges. The Recreation.gov website for Sapphire Point can be a little confusing, since it’s not actually a campground, but you reserve it like it is. Reach out if you have questions, but here’s the general low down.

Having a reservation means you will be the only couple getting married there in your three-hour block (between 6:00 am and 9:00 pm). There may be other people in the area, but they’ll catch on to what you’re doing. Every time I’ve shot an elopement at Sapphire Point, hikers and other passersby have respectfully given us privacy.

Reserving Sapphire Point Overlook costs $120 per three-hour time slot (you can book more than one if you need more time). There’s also an $8 reservation fee. You can reserve this popular view up to six months in advance. If your hearts are set on a specific date and time, I recommend setting an alarm for 8:00 am (Mountain Time!) exactly six months prior to ensure you can snag the slot as soon as it’s available. This probably goes without saying, but weekends book incredibly fast, particularly Memorial Day, Labor Day, and other holiday weekends.

I can work with you to coordinate portraits with your ceremony. You may want to schedule the photography early when the light is at its golden-y best, then have your ceremony later that day–whatever works with your park reservation, other vendors, and the arrival of guests if you’re having any.

Lake Dillon

A Lake Dillon elopement could include snow swept vistas, fields of wildflowers or trails paved in golden leaves, but it will always be amazing, especially in photographs.

And there’s nothing like an alpine lake elopement. Get married next to the river at the Silverthorne Pavilion and have a small reception with your closest friends. Or choose Windy Point for its lakeside accessibility.

You could also rent a boat and exchange vows right on Lake Dillon’s clear, pristine waters. This mountain playground offers many gorgeous views at every turn. After your ceremony and portraits, head into one of the lakeside towns for dinner and dancing.

Windy Point Group Campground

In the heart of the Rocky Mountains, the 2.3 million acre White River National Forest is a place of serenity and adventure, boasting 10 peaks surpassing 14,000 feet in elevation. Imagine a ceremony on the shore of Lake Dillon, with these dramatic mountains in the background!

Just a short hike gets you this view of Windy Point. Image: Ingrid Hubbard for Recreation.gov.

In addition to campgrounds, Windy Point also has a covered pavilion with gorgeous views of the lake so you can have that pavilion wedding you’ve always dreamed of! The site must be reserved ahead of time and costs $250. You may reserve Windy Point Group Campground up to 12 months in advance.

Boreas Pass Road

Take a drive or hike this scenic unpaved pass on the Continental Divide between Summit and Park counties. If you walk just a little ways off the heavily traveled road, you’ll find some pretty scenic spots for a secret ceremony.

Schoolmarm

Schoolmarm is located on Dercum Mountain, where the Rocky Mountains and Lake Dillon serves as a picturesque backdrop for your ceremony. Your Breck wedding celebration will start with a thrilling enclosed gondola-ride from River Run Village. You’ll need to arrange reservations with Keystone Resort, and the outdoor elopement venue rental with amazing views will run you about $2,000.

Breckenridge, Summit County, Activities

Whenever you decide to elope in Breckenridge, you’ll always find something to do or a special way to celebrate your wedding. Here are some fun ideas.

Newlyweds walk hand in hand after their Breckenridge elopement. The bride wears a brown faux fur coat and carries a colorful bouquet.

Breckenridge Heritage Alliance Tours

Learn about old Breckenridge with tours led by town historians. Take a walking history tour of Breckenridge’s restored buildings or a Haunted Breckenridge tour after dark. Find out about the roles saloons played in gold rush society and hear the stories of the folks who settled here hoping to find their fortunes in the mountains. You can even take a historical tour on skis, pan for gold at an old mine, or get a private history tour for you and your guests.

Blue River Bistro for Dinner

So eating is an activity, right? A day of hiking and eloping calls for a celebratory meal! The Blue River Bistro is sophisticated dining, mountain-style. They serve Italian-American dishes for lunch and dinner. They also have live jazz. It’s delicious, low-key, and a lovely way to end an exciting day.

Biking

Taking a mountain bike out on the trails is particularly fun to do in the fall, when you won’t find as many hikers. It’s also cooler and the mountains are covered in golden aspens. It’s the perfect time of year to try pedaling your way through all this vibrant-hued beauty. Finish your day with sampling some craft beers back in town.

Fly-Fishing

Rent all the gear you need in Breckenridge and head out with a guide or on your own to a relaxing spot on one the many rivers close to town. Licenses are available for purchase, as well as rentals for waders, rods, and reels.

Main Street

Quaint, but with lots to do, Main Street is the entertainment hub of Breckenridge. Dine, shop, check out a festival, or hear live music surrounded by the beauty of the Rocky Mountains.

Skiing and Snowboarding

The winter sports in Breckenridge are world-class. The snow is often perfect powder and the Western vibe of Breckenridge is fun and friendly. There are five major peaks–the original Peak 8, good-for-beginners Peak 9, expert Peak 10, snowboarders’ fave Peak 6, and nicely groomed Peak 7–with chair lifts that make up Breckenridge’s premier ski area.

Breckenridge Whitewater Rafting

There are a variety of rivers to explore while rafting. You can choose your adventure with a scenic float on a raft, kayak, or stand up paddle board, a fun whitewater rafting experience for the whole family, or Class IV and V epic water challenges.

Breckenridge Wedding Vendors

Whether you’re wanting a simplistic day of unplanned joy or a more elaborate ceremony, wedding vendors (and Breckenridge photographers like myself) are the do-ers who will make your dream day a reality. The good news? Breck’s expansive wedding industry offers plenty of vendors to match your distinct needs.

A word of caution? This town (and its businesses) get busy. Especially during peak seasons! So it’s important to book well in advance in order to guarantee you can get the wedding cake, musician, or other day-of vendor of your dreams.

Of course, my Breckenridge wedding packages include a little help on this front—after locking me in as your photographer, I’ll help you find the ones that fit you best. This is by no means an exhaustive list–if you’re serious about planning a Breckenridge elopement or micro-wedding, I’ll share more of my vetted vendors! These are just a few of my favorites to get ya inspired!

Breckenridge Caterers

Want to spread your wings with your reception or rehearsal dinner? These caterers are magicians and can bring their incredible cuisine to you almost anywhere.

Red Mountain Grill

The professional catering staff at Red Mountain Grill can help you create a wedding reception, luncheon, dinner, late night pool party or even breakfast buffet which your guests will remember. Whether it's 10 people or 150, they can take care of all the details. Executive chef John and event manager Andy will make sure that all the catering details at your event run smoothly and taste amazing.

Ember

The creative team of Breckenridge’s Ember restaurant will design your dream event for any size party. You can order for pick-up and take-out or have a fully staffed reception or rehearsal dinner service at your off-site venue.

Choose from their wonderfully varied menu that includes entrees of seafood and game. Flavorful vegetarian dishes are available too. Or talk with your dedicated event coordinator about your particular tastes and preferences.

Kenosha

Many of my couples like to get into the western swing of the Rockies with a downhome barbecue. And Kenosha can provide. They offer a catering menu of pulled pork, ribs, sausages, chili, fresh salads, and savory sides so you can design a smoky banquet for any size party. If you order one of their “Feasts” (BBQ and sides by the pound or pint) then plates, napkins, wet wipes, flatware, sauce and pickles are included for a stress-free rehearsal dinner or meadow picnic. Fantastic steaks and desserts are available too!

Restaurants in Breckenridge for Your Reception or Rehearsal Dinner

Breckenridge features amazing dining experiences from casual burgers and brews to haute cuisine. Whatever your tastes, Breckenridge won’t disappoint. These restaurants are my personal favorites for hosting your friends and family before or after your wedding vows.

Sauce on the Maggie

If your group is a large one, this charming Italian restaurant can hold up to 190 people. But smaller groups of up to 50 are as welcome and will enjoy the cozy ambiance of the upper dining room.

Dishes are served family style or some items can be plated banquet-style. Their menu is customizable and features fresh, local ingredients. Choose from an array of delightful appetizers, crisp salads, delicious pastas and entrees, and tempting house desserts or bring a cake for staff to cut and serve.

Their pizza is to die for, too.

Hearthstone Restaurant

Hearthstone, located in the “Kaiser House,” offers semi private reception or rehearsal space for groups. Customize a special four course menu and choose wines from their extensive list of new world bottles.

Menu choices include delectable poultry dishes, vegetarian options, fresh fish, and an eclectic offering of lamb, beef, and elk. Whenever possible, ingredients, including the produce and cheeses, are sourced locally. You’ll also enjoy beautiful views of the Breckenridge ski slopes and the Ten Mile Range as you dine.

For groups of 20 or more, a dedicated planner will coordinate your event so your celebration of getting hitched goes off without... a hitch.

Complete your bridal look with a specially designed bouq, with matching boutonnieres and corsages, of colorful flowers and bright greenery. These florists are experts in interpreting individual styles in all their creations.

Little Flower Shop, Dillon, CO

Family owned and operated, the floral artists at the Little Flower Shop are dedicated to providing couples with the freshest blooms and designs. Ask about their darling ring bearer’s pillow made from green chrysanthemums and trimmed in pink satin ribbon.

Petals of Aloha, Thornton, CO

Emily Alba, owner of Petals of Aloha, has been a floral designer since 2006. Her unique talent for expressing love and joy through flowers have made her one of my personal favorites for sourcing bouquets, centerpieces, and baskets of petals for scattering.

Our Blessed Woods on Etsy

If you decide to eschew fresh florals, definitely consider the stunning faux flowers in the handmade arrangements made from silk and foam flowers. A recent bride used these and we were both obsessed with how they turned out and looked in photos! (The bouquet and boutonnieres are also keepsakes that’ll never wilt!)

Remember to “Leave No Trace!”

Sustainability can’t just be a niche market for photographers. It must be the new normal! As a nature lover, I am dedicated to helping our earth flourish. This is why I practice “Leave No Trace” principles at each and every one of my sessions.

What exactly is Leave No Trace?
It is:
🌿 A set of ethics & best practices we should follow to enjoy and protect the outdoors at the same time
🌿 An access tool to help enjoy public lands responsibly and leave less impact
It isn’t:
🌿 Something to shame other people about or make them feel bad for not knowing
🌿 Something to use to gatekeep and keep others from enjoying the outdoors

Once you’ve booked me as your Crested Butte elopement photographer, you’ll receive my full Leave No Trace guide for couples! It’s an easy-breezy workbook designed to help you plan your dream elopement, while being mindful of the beautiful lands upon which you’ve chosen to exchange your vows.
